About Nickel Plate
History
The Nickel Plate Cross Country Ski Club was incorporated under the Society Act as a charitable institution in 1989. The impetus for its establishment was the BC Winter Games and the Canada Cup in 1990. In order to address the needs of these games a lodge was built and a 28 km system of trails was developed. Funding was provided by the Province of BC with the goal of supporting competitive sports for the Games.
The name for the club and the centre was taken from a gold mine and nearby lake. The mine is approximately 5 km west of the centre and is steeped in turn-of-the-century and mid-century history. The lake is directly across the road from the centre.
Trails & Facilities
From our initial 28 km of trails and main lodge we have expanded to 65 km 0f trails and doubled the size of the log-built lodge. Our trail system consists of 70% easy (green), 20% intermediate (blue) and 10% difficult (black), with grooming for both classic and skate skiing. We have recently developed 25 km of snowshoeing trails along with a children’s play and ski zone and a tobaggan hill.
Amenities
Apart from physical amenities such as heated washrooms, waxing rooms, kitchen facilities and clothes storage areas, we offer camaraderie and an ambience of friendliness and helpfulness. We encourage people of all ages and fitness levels to join our club and enjoy the benefits of outdoor winter activities.
