This important event was rescheduled from Stake Lake, Kamloops to Callaghan Valley/Whistler. Four Nickel Plate athletes attended – with very encouraging results.
Racing both days, Skate Skiing and Classic Technique were 2.5 kms for the 11 year olds
and 5 kms for age 12 athletes. Ailie Hayman managed a 2nd and 3rd place, while Jessica
Broder, in her first ever open competition managed a very respectable 7th on both days. This
venture proved a motivating event for these core athletes in the rejuvenated Nickel Plate Junior
Development Program. Still to come are BC Championships, BC Midget Championships and
the Telemark (West Kelowna) and Nickel Plate Loppets.

Telemark Apple Loppet 2012
Our Juniors had a successful day of racing at Telemark.
All competed in the 10-13 age group mass start classic
competition (with boys and girls together). The course
consisted of one lap of a twisting, undulating circuit.
Snow was falling throughout the race making visibility
difficult. Competing skiers represented
Sovereign Lake (Vernon), Larch Hills (Salmon Arm) and Telemark
(Kelowna).
Ailie Hayman overcame a slow start to take second overall and
first female. Jessica Broder and Rachel Shanner had solid
results, finishing close together in 3rd and 4th
places. Elena Selles continues to refine her classic
technique, with an excellent 10th placing.
Ian Williams of Telemark dominated the boys competition, while
Nickel Plate’s own Oscar Morrison turned some heads with his
“from the gun” approach, and solid second place.
Walker Singleton and Justin Odian kept the NP flag flying with
commendable 9th and 10th
placings respectfully.
Several Nickel Plate Masters competed in the 30KM Pursuit format
Loppet, consisting of 2x7.5km classic loops and 1x15km
skate circuit. This event could be done as a team, whereby
one team member raced the classic section, and the other team
member started the skate loop once the classic skier finished.
Racers also had the option to race the entire event, switching
skis, poles (and boots if necessary) in the start/finish area.
Dave Kitson and John Wilkie of NP won the men’s 80-99 Team,
while Janice Kitson teamed up with Melissa Spooner of Sovereign
to match husband Dave’s performance. Meanwhile Steve and
Caroline
Buzikievich finished 7th and 3rd
respectively in the full 30km Pursuit.
Thank you to Peach City Runners and Adventure Sports for
loaning their event tent and two waxing stands.
